About the Gold Country Celtic Society

Who are the Celts?

Celts are members of Indo-European peoples, distributed from the European continent to the British Isles, from Spain to Asia Minor. Today the term mainly refers to Highland Scots, Irish, Welsh, Cornish, or Bretons. Western Civilization has tended to emphasize the enormous debt it owes to the early cultures of Greece and Rome while ignoring its Celtic inheritance. Yet Celts — with their feudal societies, innovative use of iron, and most importantly, their legacy of art, literature, and scholarship — contributed impressively to shaping and enriching much of what is best in the modern world.

Who are we?

The Gold Country Celtic Society was organized to celebrate the culture of these proud people, many of whom, especially the Cornish and Welsh, worked the hard-rock mines and made our Nevada City – Grass Valley area famous. The Society wishes to perpetuate the Celtic tradition of music, dance, language, and costume.

We are a 501(c)3, a non-profit organization.
